What is Life Challenge?
Life Challenge of Southeastern Michigan is a one year Christian-growth program providing residential care for men and women with alcohol, drug, and other life controlling problems.
Life Challenge of Southeastern Michigan (formerly Detroit Teen Challenge) opened its doors in 1965. LCSM is an affiliate ministry of Teen Challenge International, USA. Presently, there are over 400 centers world-wide.
What is our purpose?
We do not exist simply to help persons "dry out" or "clean up." Our goal is to lead men and women into a living, dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ through which God's great salvation is experienced.
We view drug addiction and alcoholism as symptomatic of a much larger problem -- separation from God. This separation can only be overcome by repentance of sin and faith in Christ.
How is our purpose achieved?
In a protective and nurturing environment, students are exposed to the Bible daily through morning chapels, classes, and church attendance. As men and women learn and apply the truth of God’s Word to their lives, healing and wholeness result.
In addition, students engage in various work assignments around the center where they develop basic skills and character qualities. Opportunities for outreach into the community are also afforded to students (e.g., church and school rallies, street ministry, nursing home, and etc.).
Structure and discipline are very important aspects of the program. Students must follow a strict schedule from morning until evening. Very little free time is alotted. Contact with the “outside world” is strictly monitored.
Who do we help?
Life Challenge of Southeastern Michigan reaches out to men and women 18 years of age and up from all walks of life. Some come from the streets, others from well established homes. Some are directed through the court system, others have never had a problem with the law. Some are married, others are single.
In spite of the many differences, one common denominator exists — each person has come to acknowledge his or her need for help. Our mission is to provide these persons the hope necessary for lasting joy and peace.
What are the results?
We have seen hundreds of men and women bound to drugs, alcohol, sex, gambling, depression, bitterness, and the like wonderfully set free. We give Jesus Christ the glory for the radical difference He makes in all those who surrender to Him.
How are we funded?
We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) ecclesiastical corporation governed by a Board of Directors. Our support comes through individuals, churches, and businesses who believe in our mission. Life Challenge of Southeastern Michigan receives no federal, state, or local funding.
